A statue in the gardens at Topside InnThe scenery here isn’t limited to our views of the harbor. Topside Inn is also home to a wide variety of seaside perennial gardens and newly planted fruit trees, greeting guests as they walk throughout the property. We say ‘experience’ because, not only can you enjoy walking through the gardens, but we also use much of what we grow in our breakfast offerings and to decorate the inn’s common spaces throughout the season. What’s the best time to see them? What flowers and fruits can you find during your visit? Learn everything you need to know below, and as always, feel free to contact us to find out more. Then, book your stay and enjoy it all in person!

The Gardens

Blueberries, tomatoes, and herbs from the Topside Inn gardens

The flowers, herbs, and vegetables in our gardens all play an important role in the Topside Inn experience. You’re likely to enjoy them throughout your stay with us, perhaps in more ways than you think! When you arrive at the inn, you might be greeted by a freshly cut flower arrangement at the front desk from our garden. Our flowers also accent the breakfast tables and common areas as well as provide edible garnishes to dishes. Visit us in July, August, and September to see the gardens in full bloom.

The eggs benedict breakfast at Topside Inn

The gardens are more than beautiful to look at. They also offer fresh, delicious ingredients for our breakfasts, like the tomatoes for our fried green tomato eggs benedict. Our extensive herb garden provides our savory breakfasts with the fresh taste of parsley, chives, sage, cilantro, thyme, and dill; lettuce, baby spinach, or Shishito peppers are a delicious and healthy complement to our main dishes. If you have a taste for spice, you’ll love our hot sauce made with our fresh habanero peppers!

The Beginnings of Our Ocean View Orchard

You can find a total of 32 new fruit trees on our property, about half of which are on the western-facing hillside. While most of the trees were planted last season, we are looking forward to when the trees bloom in the spring, around May and June. The branches will offer a colorful show of apple, peach, pear, cherry, and plum blossoms. We hope to start harvesting fruits as early fall 2019 and expect to have an abundance of fruit to add to our homemade breakfasts with the flavors of Midcoast Maine in the coming years.

If you’d like a room with a view of the orchard, you can’t go wrong with the Leeward Guest House. Rooms 19, 20, and 21 on the lower level and Rooms 23, 24, and 25 on the upper level are all great places to relax and catch a glimpse of nature’s bounty. You can also see the fruit trees from the porches at the Windward Guest House.
