History of the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse
Did you know that Pemaquid Point Lighthouse was commissioned by President John Quincy Adams in 1827? It was built that same year, but due to poor workmanship (salt water was used in the mortar mix), the lighthouse quickly began to fall apart. It was replaced in 1835 by a much better structure that was made using only fresh water.
Today, the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse is a beloved landmark in Maine – so much so that it was picked to be featured on the state quarter! This historic light also boasts one of only six Fresnel lenses still in service in Maine.
To protect and retain the beauty of the lighthouse, the Friends of the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse chapter was formed by the American Lighthouse Foundation. This organization continues to regularly restore the beacon so visitors from all over the world can appreciate its history and beauty for years to come.
2 Things to Do During Your Visit to Pemaquid Point Lighthouse
1. Explore the Lighthouse
Visiting the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse is a fun and inexpensive activity the whole family will love. A $2 admission ticket grants you access to the lighthouse as well as the Fisherman’s Museum. You can climb the tower, snap a few photos, and learn about local maritime history. Don’t forget to check out the lovely paintings and Pemaquid Lighthouse pictures at the nearby Pemaquid Art Gallery!
2. Soak in the Sun at Pemaquid Beach Park
While you’re in the area, we highly recommend stopping by Pemaquid Beach. It’s one of the cleanest beaches on the coast of Maine with its white sugar sand and crystal-clear water. Take a leisurely stroll along the shoreline, or take a refreshing dip in the ocean during the warm summer months. There are plenty of changing rooms and showers available to rinse off. If you forget a few vacation essentials, head to the Beach Shop where you’ll find beach chairs, towels, umbrellas, sunscreen and more.
Pemaquid Beach Park is also home to a unique nature center called “Beachcombers’ Rest”. Located inside the beach pavilion, the nature center features exhibits and displays that describe the ecology of the beach. A series of hands-on exploration events are available in the summer where visitors can learn about tide pools, experience touch tanks, or sign up for sand castle competitions.
