Take the Monhegan Ferry in Boothbay Harbor to an Island Adventure

Each time you visit Boothbay Harbor, you should make it a point to discover something new and exciting. Monhegan Island is one of them. It’s a small, rocky island 10 miles off the coast and the only way to reach it is by boat. There is only one Monhegan ferry in Boothbay from which to choose: Balmy Days II. Learn more about how to get to the island and find out what you’ll experience once you land there.

Monhegan Island: A Little Bit of Paradise

Monhegan Island only has a few full-time residents. The island is a beloved summer haven for artists and others who enjoy its isolation, and relaxed pace. The word, “Monhegan” is derived from an Algonquin word, meaning “out-to-sea island.”

The Monhegan Ferry in Boothbay

Balmy Days Cruise Line is the only cruise line that offers access to Monhegan Island from Boothbay Harbor.

Your trip will be aboard the Balmy Days II, a 65-foot fiberglass boat that was custom-outfitted just for the trip from Boothbay to Monhegan Island.

Monhegan Island Ferry Schedule

Balmy Days II has daily runs from June until late September/early October. The boat departs from Pier 8 in Boothbay Harbor. The ferry leaves at 9:30 a.m. and arrives back at the pier at 4:15 p.m. The ride to and from the island is 1 ½ hours each way. You must book each leg of the trip separately. If the weather permits, Balmy Days II also offers a 30-minute island tour at 2 p.m. For more info and the latest details, visit the Balmy Days website.

Why Visit Monhegan Island?

What are some of the best things to do on Monhegan Island?

Go Birdwatching

Lobster Cove, on the south side of the island, is an excellent spot for birding. There’s an old shipwreck there as well. Lobster Cove is lovely with a meadow running down to the sea. Keep in mind that the currents can be very dangerous here, so please do not attempt to swim in this area.

Visit the Lighthouse

The Monhegan Light, built in 1824, was manned up until 1959. It is now computerized. The view from the area is lovely, overlooking the village and the harbor. But sure to visit the Monhegan Museum of Art and History, which is in the old light keeper’s house.

Visit the Headlands

No list of things to do on Monhegan Island would be complete without a visit to the Headlands. These are some of the highest cliffs in Maine and the views are spectacular. There are many miles of hiking trails, which lead to hidden coves and incredible overlooks.

A few more ideas for your day trip include:

  • Visiting an art gallery. The island has been an artist’s summer haven for well over a century. Many artists, if in residence, welcome visitors.
  • Sea kayaking is a sport for the more adventurous. Kayaks can be rented on the island.
  • Monhegan has its own brewing company, the Monhegan Brewing Company, where you can relax and talk about your adventures.
