History of the Maine Music Society

In 1991, the Androscoggin Chorale and its professional orchestra, The Maine Chamber Ensemble came together to form the Maine Music Society. It was founded with the goal of supporting educational and artistic activities for the two performing bodies. Since its opening, the Maine Music Society has attained a solid reputation for musical excellence and a wide number of notable achievements. Some of the organization’s most remarkable performances include the 1992 production of Amahl and the Night Visitors and the 1994 presentation of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

The music society has also been recognized for its annual “Battle of the Blends.” This popular fund-raising event brings together acapella groups from all over New England for an unforgettable vocal competition. These performances are so highly anticipated, they are usually always sold-out!

Upcoming Maine Music Society Concerts

1. Mozart Requiem (March 24th-25th, 2018)

The talented musicians of the Maine Music Society are excited to present Mozart Requiem, a magnificent work by one of the 18th-century’s most celebrated composers. This piece is intriguing and mysterious to many musicians and audiences due to its roughly sketched background. Since the piece was literally composed on Mozart’s deathbed, it’s unclear whom it was written for. Despite this, it has become one of the most beloved works by the composer.

2. Songs of the Great American Songbook (May 19th-20th, 2018)

This concert will highlight the music of two celebrated 20th-century composers, George Gershwin and Cole Porter. With titles like “I Get a Kick Out of You” and “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” Songs of the Great American Songbook is sure to be a sing-along favorite! Audiences will be delighted with the jazzy tunes and fantastic performances by the Maine Music Society Chorus.
