How to Spot Different Whales in Maine

For us in Boothbay Harbor, our Maine whale watching season begins in mid-April. These whales are migrating north for their feeding season. During the winter, they populated more southern waters for breeding before returning to our area to feast on our local seafood. There are many types of whales that you will be able to see when you go on a whale watching tour. The first is the Humpback whale. These beautiful creatures love to swim and jump out of the water. They also enjoy raising their tails from the waves and bringing them down with a large splash. Next is the Fin whale. This whale is a bit more streamlined, making them one of the fastest whales. Like many other whales, you will see them in groups of 3-7. While they don’t shoot out of the water, they can dive very deep. There are also other types of whales that you can see while you are out like the Minke, the Northern Right, and the Pilot Whale.

Boothbay Harbor Whale Watching Tours

Cap’ n Fish’s Whale Tour is recognized as the best whale watching in Maine experience! Board one of the region’s fastest vessels and begin an exciting voyage into the feeding grounds of these massive mammals! The waters off the Maine coast are teeming with a variety of whales including humpback, finback, minke, and more. You may also spot other marine creatures such as dolphins, sharks, and seals along the way.  Don’t forget your cameras! You’ll surely want to capture images of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

The trip in total takes a few hours as the best whale spotting places are about 20 miles off of the coast. There are a few things to keep in mind when deciding to book a Maine whale watching tour. The first is to be sure to dress in many layers. Being so far off of the coast, the temperature can vary. It’s better to dress appropriately just in case! Another piece of equipment that might be good is binoculars so you can spy on the whales from afar. Lastly, remember that these are wild animals and, therefore, they can be unpredictable. However, Cap’n Fish’s does everything they can to ensure your safety!

If no whales are seen during your voyage, you are guaranteed a standby ticket good for another whale watch on any of their other cruises. That way, you have nothing to lose!
