What Makes the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse So Special?

With 65 lighthouses spread out along its coast, it’s no wonder Maine is often referred to as The Lighthouse State. These beacons are an important part of Maine’s history and attract countless locals and tourists alike. One of the most popular is the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in Bristol, about a 40-minute drive from Topside Inn. This landmark is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the most photographed lighthouse in the state. Whether you’re enjoying a week-long vacation or are just passing through, a trip to the Pemaquid Point Light should be in your plans. Here’s why.

The History of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse

Did you know that Pemaquid Point Light was commissioned by President John Quincy Adams in 1827? It was built that same year, but due to poor workmanship (salt water was used in the mortar mix), the lighthouse quickly began to fall apart. It was replaced in 1835 by a much better structure that was made using only fresh water.

Today, the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse is a beloved landmark in Maine – so much so that it was picked to be featured on the state quarter! This historic light also boasts one of only six Fresnel lenses still in service in Maine.

Explore the Lighthouse

Visiting the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse is a fun and inexpensive activity the whole family will love. A $2 admission ticket grants you access to the lighthouse as well as the Fisherman’s Museum. You can climb the tower, snap a few photos, and learn about local maritime history. Don’t forget to check out the paintings at Pemaquid Art Gallery!

Visit Pemaquid Beach Park

While you’re in the area, we highly recommend stopping by Pemaquid Beach. It’s one of the cleanest beaches on the coast of Maine and has white sugar sand and clear water. Take a leisurely stroll along the shoreline, or go for a dip during the warm summer months. There are plenty of changing rooms and showers for you to rinse off. If you forget a few vacation essentials, head to the Beach Shop where you’ll find beach chairs, towels, umbrellas, sunscreen and more.

Pemaquid Beach Park is also home to a unique nature center called “Beachcombers’ Rest”. Located inside the beach pavilion, the nature center features exhibits and displays that describe the ecology of the beach. A series of hands-on exploration events are available in the summer where visitors can learn about tide pools, experience touch tanks, or sign up for sand castle competitions.
